Vocabulary – Words Dogs Should Know

STOP – Stop whatever you are doing.

OKAY – Dog is released from a command (praise after using this word).

GOOD DOG – What a good job (may use the word YES or good boy/girl).

SIT – Go into the sitting position. (park it)

DOWN – Lie down (do not confuse with “off”). (drop, flat, crash)

OFF – Get off me, get off the couch.

STAND – Stand still (used for grooming, vet visits).

STAY – I’m leaving, and I will return to you. (brake)

WAIT – Wait in position until I give you another command.

HEEL – Walk quietly by my left side, go fast or slow, turn with me. (cruse, drive)

EASY – Slow down, cool it, and don’t pull on the lead.

COME – Come straight to me and sit in front of me. (here, front)

COOKIE – Treat

OUTSIDE – Do you want to go outside?

FETCH – Go get an object (may use get it or find it).

GIVE – Give me the object. (out)

LEAVE IT – Stop your interest in any object, leave it alone.

MOVE – Move out of the way.

CRATE or KENNEL – Go into your crate.
